The Canelo Alvarez versus Jermell Charlo just got a whole lot more interesting as it appears that the undercard might be one of the strongest of the year. The battle of undisputed champions will take place on September 30 at the prestigious T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, as it will be broadcast on Showtime pay-per-view.
Yesterday, Keith Idec of BoxingScene.com, announced that former world champion Yordenis Ugas would return to the ring against former secondary world champion, Mario Barrios. The bout was originally ordered back in March of this year by the WBC, but was delayed by Terence Crawford facing Errol Spence Jr., when that undisputed welterweight bout overtook the division and the sport as a whole.
Per the WBC's regulations, the winner of Ugas versus Barrios would be elevated to becoming the full WBC welterweight champion should Crawford decide to move up to the junior middleweight division.
The other two bouts also serve as meaningful bouts as well. Fresh off a big win over Joey Spencer, junior middleweight contender Jesus Ramos Jr will face contender Erickson Lubin in the toughest fight of his career on paper. This bout was first reported by Dan Rafael.
The card will also feature the return of middleweight prospect Elijah Garcia facing Armando Resendiz, with the news being first reported by BoxingScene.com.
The card features four quality fights, and should get a few more bouts added to a 'pre-fight' YouTube stream portion of the card in the near future as well.
